“The arts enable us to put ourselves in the minds, eyes, ears and hearts of other human beings.” – Richard Eyre

About The Playhouse

The Playhouse Theatre (founded by the HH Dramatic Society in the early 1900’s) is one of the oldest community theatre organisations within the Western Cape, with a long standing reputation for producing and hosting top quality shows of all genres. We are a non-profit organisation with a passion for the performing arts and giving back to our community.

The performing arts play a crucial role in the betterment of individuals and communities alike. Whether an escape from reality, opening one’s eyes to new ideas and points of view, or just for pure enjoyment, the performing arts can be transformative.

Over the years, our Theatre has produced and staged hundreds of shows with the goal of entertaining and delighting our community. The quality and variety of our shows have garnered many an award, as well as the loyalty and support of our patrons. From comedies to dramas, from musicals to dance revues the Playhouse Theatre’s stage has housed it all.

Early1900s

I don’t know. Should I even bother to know?

The first Operatic and Dramatic Society started performing in the Somerset West Courthouse over 120 years ago. The Society as we know it was reconstructed after World War II in 1947 by Mrs. Cornish-Bowden, and the HH Dramatic Society was formed.

At that time, productions were hosted at the Old Masonic Hall and, later, the Somerset West Town Hall.

Mid 1900s

I don’t know, but I’m curious. Tell me more.

In the early 1970’s, thanks to the efforts of Harold Wilson, Donald Munro and Claude Clegg, a loan was secured from the Municipality, and the HHDS obtained the land and permission to build a permanent home for the theatre.

Designed by Harry Hargreaves and built by Johnny Theron - and with the support of, and donations from the local community - The Playhouse Theatre first opened its doors on 26 May 1973. The theatre continued to evolve over the following decades, with the workshop being added, the dressing and sewing rooms enlarged, and the new foyer built

Late 1900s

I do know quite a bit, but I have to be focused.

The original building consisted of a control room, auditorium, a small foyer on the west side, the stage and dressing room. The workshop was added at a later stage and then finally the first Green Room and Production Room (which later became the Secretary’s Room) the enlarged dressing room and the addition of a Sewing Room and new Foyer.

Early 2000s

I don’t even think about it. It just come out good.

The building itself and the theatre at large continued to evolve throughout the early 2000’s, with renovations and additions tackled passionately by the dedicated members to ensure that the theatre continued to offer its community world-class entertainment in a modern and pleasant environment.

2024

I don’t even think about it. It just come out good.

Every cloud has a silver lining. In April 2024 a devastating storm severely damaged The Playhouse Theatre, causing severe damage to the roof and, subsequently, to the building at large. Enter the community… With the love, support and dedication of our incredible community – both individuals and businesses alike – The Playhouse Theatre was able to not only repair the damage, but also address a number of “wish list” renovations and upgrades.

2025

I don’t even think about it. It just come out good.

Onwards and upwards! The Playhouse Theatre Community is steadfast in its commitment to continuing to live up to and build on the legacy built over decades. We can’t wait to see what’s next!

Community Involvement

The HHDS Playhouse Theatre is a Non-Profit Organisation registered with the Department of Social Development (NPO # 177-561).

As strong as our love and passion for the performing arts, is our commitment to serving our community by providing a space where the love of theatre is fostered, and by supporting those in and around our community who may not have as easy access to the joys of the performing arts.

As a community theatre, managed and supported solely by volunteers, we understand that The Playhouse Theatre has several important purposes and responsibilities:

  1. Cultural Enrichment
  2. Entertainment and Relaxation
  3. Education and Skills Development
  4. Social Commentary and Reflection
  5. Community Engagement and Enrichment

Over the years, we have supported multiple charities and community programmes within the Helderberg Basin. These include and are not limited to Helderberg Hospice, Helderberg Society for the Aged, Somerset West Night Shelter, Helderberg Sunrise Rotary Club, Sunflower Fund, Heartlands, Cotlands, Helderberg Scouts, Hottentots Holland High School, Raithby Shoe Box Project, Sir Lowry's Pass Band and Aanhouwen Work and Care Centre to name a few.

If you would like to be considered as a beneficiary, please contact us on treasurer@theplayhouse.org.za.

Meet the Team

Our Theatre is run and managed by a group of committed (unpaid) volunteers – many of whom have been volunteering for decades!  - whose passion and dedication are the lifeblood of The Playhouse Theatre. The support of these remarkable individuals, as well as our loyal patrons, is awe-inspiring, and without them the Theatre would not have become the community staple it is.
